I went to see Divergent (based on Veronica Roth’s novels) last weekend. Expecting little more than a polished version of “The Hunger Games” (sex and crime do sell!), I was in for a treat.
Although sharing some of the dystopian premises of the latter, Divergent keeps its level of suspense above the grinding toll of social injustice by gently grazing the lofty heights of introspection. The building blocks of society, humanity’s eternal longing for peace and the part each plays in it are themes that are woven through the dramatization of this tale of valour.
The admittedly yet surprising blonde (Shailene Woodley) at its centre ends up being an added bonus.
